“This is all about my vision of Cuba. But of course, what do I know about Cuba? It is very childish, my idea,” said Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel’s Cruise 2017 show. Staged in its capital Havana in May, the show saw the inimitable designer reimagine the nation’s history and heritage through Che Guevara berets (a “playful nod” to the Marxist revolutionary), prints of Cadillacs and cigars, and other Cuba-flavoured iterations of the house’s signature designs.

Now, Chanel has unveiled the collection’s accompanying campaign – a series of images shot by Lagerfeld, like nearly all of its visuals. To model the range, the designer enlisted Argentinian beauty Mica Arganaraz and British androgyne Stella Tennant, capturing them on the sun-soaked streets of Havana and on the coast.

Over the past few years, Chanel has staged its shows in a number of far-flung locations, from Dallas and Dubai to Salzburg and Seoul – where the house chooses to hold its next is anyone’s guess.

The unveiling of this campaign comes just weeks after Chanel’s SS17 ready-to-wear show which saw the worlds of fashion and tech collide – servers filled the set, ‘Chanel bots’ walked the runway and colourful cables inspired the prints.

Back in May, Chanel became the first luxury house to hold a runway show in Havana, Cuba — designer Karl Lagerfeld had never even visited the island until days before the event — and flew 700 guests and 45 models to the picturesque (and very trendy) locale for a weekend-long extravaganza to celebrate the French label's cruise 2016/2017 collection. With their gifted Chanel fedoras, a fleet of colorful, vintage convertibles on hand to shuttle them around town, local musicians providing a live runway soundtrack and an organized group outing to Cabaret Tropicana, attendees were given a crash course in Cuban culture — well, at least Lagerfeld's romanticized (if not slightly myopic) ideas about Cuban culture. "This is all about my vision of Cuba," Lagerfeld told The Cut. "But of course, what do I know about Cuba? It is very childish, my idea."

The collection, which featured both stereotypical and subtle nods to the country (for instance, the tweeds and touristy T-shirts in vibrant colors, several takes on the guayabera, a traditional Cuban shirt, and separates in military-inspired olive green) was undeniably Chanel, and in keeping with the season's theme, Lagerfeld shot models Mica Arganaraz and Stella Tennant around the streets of Havana and along the rocky coastline. According to a release, the black berets the models wear in the images are "a playful nod to Che," and the color palette is inspired by "the vibrant facades of Havana." Considering how many editorials have been shot in Cuba over the past year, we expect this to be just one of many campaigns set on the island in the seasons to come.

CHANEL BOY ENCHAINED BAG FOR CRUISE 2016 COLLECTION

Because we’re also ga-ga over revamps, we’ll be ogling at the all-new Chanel Boy Enchained Bag that’s made especially for the Cruise 2016 Collection. It’s mighty fine, as per Chanel usual, and it’s all yours for the taking (but for now, no deets about prices and availability…but patience is a virtue, so…).

READ: Chanel Boy Quilted Enchained Bag

Some weeks ago, we were able to feature the original Chanel Boy Enchained Bag (which had quilted edges). You can click on the link above for more details about this baby as well.

So, back to the topic – as we’ve mentioned, the original Enchained Bag had quilted edges reminiscent of Classic Flaps, but this time the Cruise 2016 variation has none of that. Instead, it has a layers of leather and chain on its edges and in front, like a dazzling array of metal. Also, instead of a smooth, leather finish, it has a seemingly embossed leather that’s textured like python skin – something that’s definitely worth mentioning! Let’s not forget about its clasp and hardware, though – they’re all dark silver, which is very much exciting. Foolproof combinations are always, always a plus factor.

So, what do you think about this piece? Is it something you’d consider getting? Comment now and let us know!

Chanel’s Cruise 2017 Show To Take Place In Cuba

Other Brands

Is Karl Lagerfeld ever going to stop working restlessly, or at least start seeking more conventional places to show his Chanel’s cruise collections? Probably not, or at least not now, as proved by his latest decision to show the upcoming Chanel cruise 2017 collection in (drum rolls, please) Havana, Cuba! Although being a culturally rich country full of traditions and history, Cuba has until this year been almost inaccessible to anyone, who was willing to seek any sort of inspiration from this amazing country.

Chanel's Cruise 2017 Show To Take Place In Havana, Cuba

In fact, for a few months already, with trade relations starting to open up between Cuba and the USA, travelers, businessmen and artists have decided to finally explore the Caribbean archipelago. Cuba has increased its popularity since earlier this year, becoming one of the most popular destinations for many celebrities, such as Katy Perry, Rihanna and the rock & roll star Mick Jagger. Karl Lagerfeld also decided to contribute to the new Cuban chapter, explaining his choice of the location for the Chanel cruise 2017 show stating that “the cultural wealth and the opening of Cuba to the world, make the country a source of inspiration for me and Chanel”.

On the other hand, being the first Latin American country to ever host a Chanel cruise collection’s fashion show, Cuba will also represent a new chapter in Chanel’s history. So, for this forthcoming cruise collection we must expect a mixture of French, Caribbean and Latin American influences, which will probably give Chanel a whole new and unexpected look.

However, although Chanel’s fashion show is going to be the first major fashion event to hit the Cuban capital (its cruise 2017 collection is set to take place in Havana on May 3, 2016), Lagerfeld is not the first fashion designer who found himself greatly inspired by the Cuban culture and nature. Most recently, in fact, designers such as Proenza Schouler’s creative directors and Stella McCartney have been influenced by Cuba, giving their resort 2016 collections a colorful and cheerful Caribbean look.

Cuba, which tried to enter the fashion circuit in the late Eighties with a fashion show called ‘Cubamoda’ (sponsored by the French brand Contrex and which hosted designers such as Paco Rabanne), may finally be ready to enter the spotlight thanks to Chanel. There’s already great anticipation about the event, and many newspapers and reporters can’t help but show their great excitement about it.“In Cuba next spring, leading fashion figures will gather in Havana in one of the most anticipated events in the past half century,” stated an official report by AIN, the Cuban official distributor.

Since the early ’00s, Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld has circled the globe with his cruise fashion events, flying from Dubai to Singapore, Venice and, most recently, to Seoul. He has always drawn great inspiration from these exotic and exciting cultures, creating some of his most acclaimed pieces. Cuba’s unexplored territory is surely giving a lot of work to Lagerfeld, and we can’t do anything but wait for the designer’s next unconventional show.
