Chanel Limited Edition Mademoiselle J12

Jewelry & Watches

One of most anticipated timepieces from Chanel Horlogerie since it made its debut at #BaselWorld2017 has finally been launched, simply known as the Mademoiselle J12, featuring Coco Chanel telling time by way of her hands, of course. In tribute to the woman who started it all, the timepiece is humorous and playful, available in two colours (there’s the white on white, and the black on black), with Coco wearing her synonymous jacket, skirt, two-toned pumps and hat, before being finished with, you guessed it, pearl earrings that you could say was her uniform for most of her life.

Available in limited quantities (there are only 555 pieces per colour worldwide) because 5 was also Coco’s lucky number, it is priced at SGD10,400. Which isn’t all too bad for such a memorable piece, provided you can get it of course, because I hear the wait list is pretty long. But don’t let that stop you from heading down to Chanel’s fine jewellery boutique at Ngee Ann City (#01-04) for a look.

The flawlessly clear case allows you to see the distinctive double tourbillon movement (not new, but patented); a hand wound calibre with a power reserve of 120-hours, and two distinctive tourbillon escapements. One of them is actually inside the other, the outer tourbillon rotates every four minutes while the inner tourbillon rotates every 60 seconds. This complicated movement scored 915 out of 1,000 points at the International Chronometry Competition.

Priced at $1.275 million this watch is exclusive to the USA so if you’re not already in the country, you’re going to want to book your tickets. Timepieces like these come only once in a while and are bound to become instant collector’s items. The futuristic look of the sapphire crystal watch is a perfect complement to the aesthetic of another item that’s probably on your shopping list for the year.

Rihanna and Dior Launch Futuristic Sunglasses

Jewelry & Watches

Hats off to Dior once again! The premium brand keeps up delighting the audience to bits albeit without yet any appropriate candidate to step into the shoes of the brand’s last creative director Raf Simons. Instead Dior’s creative team is drawing a bead on bringing to the table celebrity-oriented campaigns and collaborations. Rihanna has yet again united her Barbadian Bad Gal essence with the luxury brand to launch a collection of new futuristic all-around gorgeous sunglasses dubbed simply “Rihanna”.

Dior's Rihanna Sunglasses Collection 2016

As WWD reports, Dior’s Rihanna sunglasses collection will come into season exclusively at Dior stores starting from early June and will feature only one frame design in six color variations. The silver, pink, blue, green and red versions will come with a price tag of $840, while the 24-karat gold-plated one will retail a little bit higher – for $1,950.

This kind of flat edgy frame hit upon RiRi not at this point. She has always been obsessed with that futuristic eyewear on La Forge from “Star Trek” and as she herself remarked, when she was shown all the materials she could play with, they all surprisingly came together to form that long-cherished design.

“We are very pleased to partner for the second time with Rihanna,” said Dior chief executive officer Sidney Toledano. “She is an artist, an entertainer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a style icon for today’s generation.”

Let us recall that it was last year when the Dior + Rihanna tandem kick-started with Rihanna continuing the much-buzzed-about ”Secret Garden IV” – Versailles series starring in the short film shot by Steven Klein, where she was meandering through the lofty halls of the Palace of Versailles all in darkness and shining up hill and down dale with Dior sunglasses, handbags and the clothes from the Esprit Dior collection shown in Tokyo in December 2014.

Dior's Rihanna Sunglasses Collection 2016

And now one year later when she has already earned herself a stable place in the fashion arena via her first ever full Fenty x Puma fall 2016 collection, the collaboration with American sock and underwear brand Stance and recently also Manolo Blahnik over a new shoe line, premium house Dior chooses the very Rihanna for their first ever design project with the brand’s ambassador.

Moreover, according to the brand’s eyewear designer Mathieu Jamin, this is their fist experience to come together with a celebrity over a new design project, which was decidedly crowned with immense success.

“She chose all the materials,” Jamin said. “We had a lot of different samples with different effect of metals. She chose all the lenses and took time to match all the colors together to see if it was right on her face. It was really important to her.”

Rihanna herself described the design process being something so easily handled. It was within a single day that the brand’s sunglass archives were checked, the flat futuristic design determined and shades and materials cherry-picked. Then it was a matter of weeks before the dark beauty could see the first prototype of her star-trek-inspired sunglasses.

Though the launch of Dior’s Rihanna sunglasses will not be accompanied by any official campaign, Jean-Baptiste Mondino captured RiRi showing off each version of the audacious sunglasses for Dior’s in-house editorial. But that’s on behalf of Dior for our bait moments; RiRi’s bait was even stronger when she shared her eyewear-centered photo on her Instagram account thus precisely teaching us how it is best to rock any of these cool pair of sunglasses through real life avenues.

Montblanc 1858 Timepiece Collection

Jewelry & Watches

IMAGE: MONTBLANC

Making old new again is one thing, but doing it well is the part that’s perhaps hardest to pull off, as luxury brands that dip into archives for the sake of offering something ‘new’ to customers have realised. But when it’s done well, it deserves to be celebrated, which brings us to Montblanc’s new 1858 Timepiece collection. Inspired by vintage lines created throughout the 157-year history of Minerva, the watch manufacturer (now owned by Montblanc, by the way), they have released four timepieces, one the 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter (shown above), the other the1858 Small Second Special Edition (shown below).

Cast in 18K red gold and made reminiscent of chronographs worn by adventurers of that time, even the winding crown is made with extended fluted facets, a vintage throwback to the time when one had to wear gloves whilst adjusting the dial. Watch hands are luminescent, even Montblanc’s historic logo is used for that truly vintage feel, which also happens to be the bit I love the most.

IMAGE: MONTBLANC

More specifically, it is this that I’m loving (and eyeing) for myself. Known as the 1858 Small Second Special Edition, it’s as straightforward as it gets: a stainless steel 44 mm case (I do love my watches big) with a manually wound movement, the same glow-in-the-dark watch dial that’s limited to just 858 pieces, in tribute to Minerva’s 1858 birthday.

Paired with a black alligator strap that features contrast stitching, it’s another handsome timepiece that will work well with most anything I wear, be it dressed up or dressed down.

For those without deep pockets (because anything that comes in limited numbers will naturally cost more), here are the other two from the same collection that are more entry-level. Simply known as the 1858 Small Second, they also feature stainless steel cases but comes more pared down, one with a brown calfskin leather strap that I love love love, the other a bracelet that’s a tad odd, if you ask me. Both priced under the SGD5000 range, it will also make a great gift for the man who wants something ruggedly handsome and hardy.
